Mealymouthed Christianity

When I was growing up, I would spend my summers living with my Uncle Steve on the 155 acre homestead that my mom and her 15 brothers and sisters grew up on. My Uncle Steve had been a POW in a German Stalag during WWII. He was a very interesting individual. One word that he used a lot was ‘mealymouthed’ to describe some of the individuals he had to interact with. I never gave it much thought or heard this word used by anyone else very much.

mealy-mouthed – adjective: afraid to speak frankly or straightforwardly; unwilling to tell the truth in plain language

Recently I was looking for a word to describe how my dealings with Christianity in the USA have been over the last couple of years. This word popped into my head and described it perfectly. Only problem is that this word is not politically correct to use anymore. Guess what words we now use to replace ‘mealymouthed’ because ‘mealymouthed’ seems so judgmental? The words we use now are ‘politically correct’ in order to be politically correct. Wow, what a play on words. But when you truly look at, instead of being an irony, ‘mealymouthed’ and ‘politically correct’ virtually mean the same thing.

politically correct – adjective: conforming to a belief that language and practices which could offend, should be eliminated, even if avoiding the truth

But guess what? That is exactly what being ‘politically correct’ is all about. It is about not speaking frankly or straightforwardly when the situation warrants it. It has now crept into every part of our society, even the Christian Church.

Let’s go on from here. Guess what it is called when the truth is skirted and it should not be? It is called ‘deception’. The Bible says ‘deception’ is ‘lying’, and ‘lying’ is ‘sin’. Wow, mealymouthed to politically correct to skirting the truth to deception to lying to sin!

Remember, Jesus told us to be wise with our words:

“Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.” (Matthew 10:16 NKJV)

But I am not talking about that. I am clearly talking about when the truth is warranted and it is withheld. See what Jesus says following the verse above:

“But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils and scourge you in their synagogues. You will be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you. Now brother will deliver up brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.” (Matthew 10:17-22 NKJV)

There are places on this earth where Christians are severely persecuted and martyred for the sake of their faith in Jesus Christ. We are still fortunate in the United States because Christians really are not persecuted much yet. What we may call persecution is not really persecution at all. It comes in the category of ridicule. So let me give some examples from everyday life in the USA so there are no misunderstandings.

Just because someone is overweight, we are not to go up to them and say they are overweight or fat. The situation does not warrant it. It would be just plain mean. It would of been mean to do it 100 years ago and it would be still mean today.

But now days when a fellow Christian gets involved with something that could be spiritually damaging, many Christians around them do not want to get involved because they have been programmed by society that it is not the thing to do. We are taught to respect other people’s choices even if…..

The reason I am writing this article is because I have contacted major Christian publications, organizations, and denominations seeking answers to major concerns I have with what they turned a blind eye to. They do not want to take a stand because it all boils down to possible loss of donations which boils down to decrease in finances which boils down to money. Always follow the money. Not only will they not take a stand, but they will not even give the courtesy to reply back. Even the Temple Authorities replied back to Jesus:

“I’ll tell you by what authority I do these things if you answer one question,” Jesus replied. “Did John’s authority to baptize come from heaven, or was it merely human? Answer me!” They talked it over among themselves. “If we say it was from heaven, he will ask why we didn’t believe John. But do we dare say it was merely human?” For they were afraid of what the people would do, because everyone believed that John was a prophet. So they finally replied, “We don’t know.” And Jesus responded, “Then I won’t tell you by what authority I do these things.” (Mark 11:29-33 NLT)

So what does it all comes down to on the individual level? It all comes down to the consequences. Christians in the USA do not want to suffer any consequences for their faith when Jesus clearly taught that there will be consequences if you truly follow Him. They would rather follow the prosperity gospels that are aired every week by so-called ministers with wide grinning smiles who preach non-confrontational sermons where the major concern is about what Jesus can do for you rather than what you can do for Jesus.

I myself, try my best not to be mealymouthed. Yet at the same time I restrain myself when wisdom dictates. If it is the truth and it needs to be said, I obey the Lord and write about it. You probably will never see any of my articles in any major US Christian publication or website because the unrestrained truth always steps on a few toes. Remember that no one will ever experience the freedom of proclaiming the truth if they are always worried about the consequences. What really needs to be done is obey God and then leave the consequences to Him!

On the personal level, I am a member of a local congregation and have a pastor over me. But this websites does not deal at all in any kind of revenue nor is it affiliated with any organization. I do solemnly recognize that I will have to answer to the Lord in judgment for every word I have written on this site:

My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment. (James 3:1 NKJV)

In conclusion, I believe with every bone in my body crying out, that Christianity is about to be turned upside down very shortly, especially in the USA. Jesus wants to get the wrinkles out of His bride’s wedding dress before He comes to take her away. Are you ready?
