“Against its will, all creation was subjected to God’s curse. But with eager hope, the creation looks forward to the day when it will join God’s children in glorious freedom from death and decay. For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. And we believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering. We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children, including the new bodies he has promised us.” (Romans 8:20-23 NLT)
Everyday, what I hear in my spirit and my senses is three groanings going on, and all three are getting louder and louder as each day passes. One is from nature itself. The physical earth which is the Lord’s creation, is groaning for His return as outlined in the parallel chapters of Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21:
“There will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven.” (Luke 21:11 NKJV)
“There will be earthquakes in many parts of the world, as well as famines. But this is only the first of the birth pains, with more to come.” (Mark 13:8 NLT)
The second groan is from society itself. It is groaning for a solution to its problems that have come about because of our turning away from God. We are looking for the ‘answer man’ who can take the reigns and lead us out of the mess we made of things. We as Christians know that only the Lord Jesus Christ can do that and will demonstrate it during the Millenial Kingdom. But before that, the world will harbor in a deceptive satanic being called the Antichrist for the 7 year tribulation period where the wrath of God will be released:
“For that day will not come until there is a great rebellion against God and the man of lawlessness is revealed—the one who brings destruction.” (2 Thessalonians 2:3 NLT)
The third groan is from our own body as we long for our glorified bodies and to live eternally with the Lord:
“For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life.” ( II Corinthians 5:2, 4 NKJV)
As these three groanings are amplified as each day passes, we know we are getting closer and closer to the end and the fulfillment of all scripture. This brings an even more urgency to Jesus’ promise and John’s plea:
He who is the faithful witness to all these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon!” Amen! Come, Lord Jesus! (Revelation 22:20 NLT)
May we also join in and pray, “Come Lord Jesus!”
