Conformity’s Ills

According to the dictionary, ‘conformity’ means: action in accord with prevailing social standards, attitudes, practices, etc.

Conformity has become a tool of Satan. In today’s society, it is in direct opposition to the ways of God. As Christians, our actions are to be in accordance with the teachings of the Word of God, not the standards set up by the world.

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” (Romans 12:2 NKJV)

Here is a news article I just saw on Fox News:

Princeton Professor Warns New Students Against ‘Groupthink and Conformism’

Professors to Class of 2021: Stop being snowflakes

A Princeton University professor who signed an open letter encouraging incoming college freshmen to “think for yourself” told Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight” Wednesday that “you cannot seek the truth if you’re a conformist.”
“We’re telling our students not to fall into that groupthink,” Professor Robert P. George told host Tucker Carlson. “You should be pursuing the truth. That’s what being in college is all about. It’s learning to pursue the truth and it’s learning to become a life-long truth seeker.”
George, a professor of politics and jurisprudence, was one of 16 faculty members from Princeton, Harvard and Yale who signed the letter warning the Class of 2021 about the danger of “falling into the vice of conformism” on college campuses.
“In today’s climate, it’s all-too-easy to allow your views and outlook to be shaped by dominant opinion on your campus or in the broader academic culture,” the letter says in part. “At many colleges and universities … it leads [students] to suppose that dominant views are so obviously correct that only a bigot or a crank could question them.”
“Epithets like ‘bigotry’ far too often are used to shut down debate,” George said. “It’s the equivalent of saying ‘This conversation is over because the Bible says.’ … Just as we would accuse someone who tried to shut down conversation [that way] of being a fundamentalist, all too often we have secular fundamentalists today; people who because of their beliefs about same-sex marriage or abortion … want to shut down debate and discussion by calling the other guys names.”
“We’re trying to tell our students, ‘Don’t fall for it. Don’t put up with it,'” George added. “Certainly don’t practice it. But don’t allow yourselves to be intimidated and bullied by those who do practice it. They are the real bigots.”

I understand what the Professor is saying. We as Christians must make sure we never get caught in the trap of turning people off by saying, “This conversation is over because the Bible says.” In Acts 17, Paul reasoned with the men of Athens on Mars Hill. He did not come saying, “God says, and that’s all there is to it.” He debated with them, invoking their curiosity.

Paul never conformed to any one group. He became a Greek to the Greeks, a Roman to the Roman, a Jew to the Jews, and the Gentile to the Gentiles.

“I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.” (I Corinthians 9:22 NKJV)

Paul did this so he could show them the way to Jesus Christ, Who was the only real ‘truth’ in the world.

“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:32 KJV)

When we reason with those in the world, we must take on the tactics of Paul. We must make sure that we rightly divide the Word of God and make sure that we don’t use it as a club on people’s heads.

“Work hard so you can present yourself to God and receive his approval. Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth. Avoid worthless, foolish talk that only leads to more godless behavior.” (2 Timothy 2:15‭-‬16 NLT)

Recognize what we are up against, especially with the younger generation. Institutions of higher learning have brainwashed those coming through their campuses. Look what the Wall Street Journal had to say in an article from 6/6/17: “According to CLA+ testing results, most of our Universities have failed their students miserably. They teach ‘what to think’ rather than ‘how to think with deductive reasoning’ to function properly in the real world.”

Because of the godless indoctrination of our Universities, the divisions in this country are getting wider and wider apart. Just read the following article from AP News I read the other day:

Division in America

As you can see by this article, it is very hard to find any common ground at all when trying to debate issues. That is why we must be ever so careful with the words that we choose when we speak to those in the world around us, especially when we try to present them with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We need to pray for Holy Spirit discernment on our part and we need to pray for Holy Spirit conviction on their part. We must face the fact that we can talk until we are blue in the face, but only Holy Spirit conviction can break through their clouded minds.
