Treasures in Jesus Christ

There is an intrinsic bond between Jesus (the living Word of God), the Bible (the written Word of God), the treasures of heaven, and the treasures of godly wisdom and knowledge.

Jesus showed a link between the written Word of God and Himself, in that He is the subject of the written Word:

“You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me.” (John 5:39 NIV)

The following scriptures cement this intrinsic bond together:

“The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field. Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant on the lookout for choice pearls. When he discovered a pearl of great value, he sold everything he owned and bought it!” (Matthew 13:44‭-‬46 NLT

In Him (Jesus Christ) lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. (Colossians 2:3 NLT)

The Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:1‭, ‬14 NKJV)

Jesus answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ” (Matthew 4:4 NKJV)

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12 NKJV)

Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (Ephesians 6:13‭, ‬17 NKJV)

The reason I wanted to go into scriptural depth to show this bond is that I hear people proclaim how much they love Jesus, but then when the rubber meets the road, you find out that they don’t study the Bible, the very ‘Word of God’. Most don’t even wipe the dust off and open their Bible. I compare it to getting married without ever wanting to know anything about the person you married.

Jesus taught us how to pray in the book of Matthew: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread” (Matthew 6:9-11). Notice “our daily bread.” Then Jesus taught us in the book of John: “I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world” (John 6:48-51). Notice “I am the bread of life”. Jesus was essentially saying, “I am the bread! I am your strength, your vision, your redemption, your freedom. I am your protector and your guide. Everything that you need for life and godliness can be found in me.” If you are not reading the Word of God then you are not eating this Living Bread.

The only way to unlock the treasures in Jesus Christ is through the written Word of God, the Bible. Even if a person prays, it doesn’t go too far because prayer is supposed to be two-way communication. God speaks through His written Word. It is where true wisdom and knowledge are.

In conclusion, I want to leave you with this question:

Have you brushed the dust off of your Bible yet? Or, if you have a smart phone Bible application, have you opened it yet?
