Not My Will But Thy Will

Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may Your name be kept holy. May Your Kingdom come soon. May Your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. (Matthew 6:9‭-‬10 NLT)

In order to get my point across in this article, I must start off by going back to the days when TV was king. It was the time when Jim and Tammy Bakker’s PTL Club and Jimmy Swaggart’s Ministry were the Christian shows to watch. I remember how many men and women alike in our congregation would miss services, then brag about how fantastic these shows were. This grieved me much as an Elder in the church. I saw how it hurt my Pastor even more. We couldn’t say much because it would be misconstrued as jealousy. But we knew what the Word of God taught and the dangers of sitting in front of a TV, rather than being in fellowship:

And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of His return is drawing near. (Hebrews 10:25 NLT)

We also recognized that everyone in the congregation was important and when someone was missing, the church body felt it:

A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. (1 Corinthians 12:7 NLT)

All that we could do was pray and keep seeking and doing the will of the Father. It wasn’t long that both of these shows ended in horrific scandals because of behind the scenes sin. We were ready to minister to those in the congregation whose faith was shaken by it. What a blow to the Church world:

Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant. (Galatians 6:7 NLT)

As I look around, whether it be the World, America, or the Church, I see the ‘Me Me Syndrome’. I can understand the ‘World’ because it is Satan’s playground. I can even understand ‘America’ because we have turned our backs on our Christian heritage. But the ‘Church’? What happened to the ‘Our Father’ where we are supposed to sincerely pray, “Thy Will Be Done!”? We need to look in the mirror and examine ourselves. We need to grasp a hold of Paul’s mindset:

You see, we are not like the many hucksters who preach for personal profit. We preach the Word of God with sincerity and with Christ’s authority, knowing that God is watching us. (2 Corinthians 2:17 NLT)

Now take an even closer look at America. We are coming apart at the seams. Lawlessness and disregard for the Constitution have infiltrated our Congress. It is spreading like a wildfire:

And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. (Matthew 24:12 ESV)

As we see the end approaching so quickly where the trumpet can sound at any second, are we continuously seeking ‘Thy Will Be Done’ or are we blinded by ‘self’? I hope this article prompts us to sincerely seek the answer and make corrections as needed. Jesus does not want to take the wheel. He wants each of us to give Him the wheel. He wants us to give Him complete control of our lives. He wants to be our LORD. He doesn’t want to be just a figurehead in our lives!
