Red or the Blue Pill?

The terms “red pill” and “blue pill” refer to a choice between the willingness to learn a potentially unsettling or life-changing truth by taking the red pill or remaining in contented ignorance with the blue pill. The terms refer to a scene in the 1999 film “The Matrix”.

In The Matrix, the main character Neo is offered the choice between a red pill and a blue pill by rebel leader Morpheus. The red pill represents an uncertain future—it would free him from the enslaving control of the machine-generated dream world and allow him to escape into the real world, but living the “truth of reality” is harsher and more difficult. On the other hand, the blue pill represents a beautiful prison—it would lead him back to ignorance, living in confined comfort without want or fear within the simulated reality of the Matrix. As described by Morpheus: “You take the blue pill…the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill…you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.” Neo chooses the red pill.

This very famous scene from The Matrix is so pertinent to what we see happening in our world today. Please watch the scene:

Too many Christians today have swallowed the blue pill. We are warned to become fully established in the Word of God, have our spiritual senses honed, and to recognize the lies we are bombarded with:

For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.
(Hebrews 5:12‭-‬14 ESV)

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. (Ephesians 6:12‭-‬13 ESV)

Jesus told us that we can know the truth because He is truth:

“If you abide in My word, you are truly My disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31‭-‬32 ESV)

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” (John 14:6 ESV)

The choice is yours! Which pill are you swallowing?
