You are driving down the road and don’t have a minute to spare to be on time for a very important meeting. All of a sudden, there is a detour ahead and the road of your projected path is blocked. The steam is rolling off of your head and you totally disregard the beautiful scenery you were never exposed to before as you travel along on this unexpected path laid out by the detour arrows. You look at it as an obstacle, whereas the car in front of you has an old married couple who just found out that one of them does not have long to live. You see them pull over to the side of the road and get out to enjoy the wildflowers growing in the field they never came across before. You can say that you looked at the detour as an obstacle whereas the old couple looked at it as an opportunity to spend a precious moment together.
It is the same way when we go through life and hit difficulties. Do we seize the moment as an opportunity or look at it as an obstacle? Do we grumble and complain, or do we look around and see that there is someone who is not a Christian that is in our grasp and that we have a chance to rise above the situation and be a witness to them and possibly lead them to Jesus Christ?
Peter, who’s rough disposition was radically changed by Jesus, gives us sound advise:
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear. (1 Peter 3:15 NKJV)
