The Silver Cord

Sometimes we forget how fragile life is in this age of modern medicine and high tech advancements. Our life is but a thin silver cord that can snap at any moment. This silver cord is what is believed to connect our soul to our earthen vessel. Ecclesiastes 12:6-7 says, “Yes, remember your Creator now while you are young, before the silver cord of life snaps and the golden bowl is broken. Don’t wait until the water jar is smashed at the spring and the pulley is broken at the well. For then the dust will return to the earth, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.”

2 Corinthians 5:6-11 says, “So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. Knowing, therefore, the terror of the Lord, we persuade men.”

My oldest son was named Joshua Daniel. Joshua and Daniel are two of  my favorite leaders of the Bible. My favorite verse in the Bible is Daniel 5:23. In this verse Daniel confronted Belshazzar the King of Babylon and told him that the God who holds his breath in His hand and owns all his ways, he had not glorified. Then in verse 30, Daniel tells us that Belshazzar was slain that night.

Make sure that you glorify the God who holds your very breath in His hand and owns all your ways. Death can be so sudden that you will not even be able to take another breath. Joshua died in 2005 at the young age of 23 behind the wheel of a work vehicle with a workmate right next to him. One second he was breathing, the next he was slumped over dead in his buddy’s lap. What is so astonishing is that the autopsies showed no apparent reason for his death. When your time to stand before the LORD is appointed, nothing can stand in the way. Are you ready?
